Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medications, which they do in conjunction with providing psychotherapy, though medical and pharmacological interventions are often their focus. Most psychologists hold doctorate degrees, are not medical doctors, and cannot prescribe medications. Rather, they solely provide psychotherapy, which may involve a variety of talk therapies and psychological testing and evaluations. A psychotherapist uses talk therapy and other interventions to treat people for emotional problems and mental illnesses. Depending on their degree and specialty, psychotherapists can be mental health counselors, counselors, or social workers. They can work with individuals, couples, groups, or families. The main differences between psychologists and psychotherapists involve their level of education and training, authority to make mental health diagnoses and treatment approaches. Choosing one or the other depends on the concerns you want to address. It is possible to see both a psychiatrist and psychotherapist or psychologist at the same time.
Five Broad Categories for psychotherapy include Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioral, Behavioral, Psychodynamic, and Holistic therapy. Some approaches work best for specific conditions; others can help with a range of issues. Depending on clients' needs, psychologists generally draw on one or more theories.
It may be best to seek therapy if you are often unhappy or feel overwhelmed and hopeless about issues in your life. Therapy can also help if you cannot focus on work or school, experience addiction, or feel like hurting yourself or someone else. Some people may avoid treatment, and there are many reasons for this. You can undergo therapy also just to have someone outside your circle to discuss your daily life functions in a safe, judgment-free environment.
If you have health insurance, chances are good that your policy provides some level of coverage. There are large differences between the benefits health insurers provide and the out-of-pocket costs you might be required to pay. Contacting your Health Care insurance, they can answer any questions regarding out-of-pocket costs and copays. If seeking through your insurance with employment, ask about the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), where a certain number of sessions are offered at no charge.
Building rapport with my client is important to me. Having a relationship with every one of my clients is my top priority on top of their safety. In the first session, we build rapport through conversation, where I ask questions regarding your likes, interests, family, strengths, and challenges. You can also ask me questions, as transparency is important. We will work together to discuss your goals for therapy, expectations, and more. We will complete documentation, including a biopsychosocial, which includes questions regarding your current symptoms, family history, medical history, and behavior onsets.
Therapy works if you work it. Show up, be honest with yourself and your therapist, and you will gain everything you want to accomplish and more. Understand it will not be an easy process, and some sessions will be harder than others but continue to stay focused, do your homework, and apply what you learn in sessions outside of your sessions. Give it some time and be kind to yourself throughout the process, taking it one session at a time.
We have a selection of sessions that work around you. If you can't find what you're looking for, get in touch and we can find a path forward.
